このページは「BLUE BACKS 理系のための英語「キー構文」46―英語論文執筆の近道(2009年9月20日、原田豊太郎、講談社)」を参考にしています。
この本は、「日本語の構文と英語の構文を対比させる」というアプローチをしており、ここが新鮮です。
私は大学受験時代しか英語を勉強していませんが、当時は「英語の構文150」のように、まず英文を読む、英語の構文を見つける、日本語に訳す、、、というアプローチでした。
なお、この本は「科学論文」を英語で書くのに必要な構文に絞っています。
私は製造業の会社の技術部に勤めていますので実際に使う英語はビジネス英語というより「科学英語」です。
たまたま本屋でブルーバックスの棚を見ていたらこの本を見つけ、中身をみて、これだ！と思いました。
印象に残った構文など、実際に私は使うためにホームページに載せました。

構文「…は…が…」

この構文は日本語において重要な構文だそうである。
しかし、これにぴったりの英語構文が存在しないそうです。
したがって、ケースバイケースで意味が近いものを対応させないといけない。

1.…は…がある

1.1 haveを使う

「…は…を持っている(有している)」、「…には…がある」と言い換えても意味が変わらない場合、haveを使う。

◆PL法は不純物の検出と同定においていくつかの限界がある。
   →「PL法には…限界がある」と言い換えて、
The PL method has some limitations in the detection and identification of impurities.

◆得られた製品は著しい耐食性、耐衝撃性及び耐熱衝撃性がある。
   →「得られた製品は…を持っている」と言い換えて、
The resultant product has outstanding corrosion, impact, and thermal shock resistance.

◆その方法論はいくつかの欠点があり、祖先の細胞をこれまで特定できていない。
　 →「その方法論には…がある」と言い換えて、
The methodology has some shortcomings and has not been able to specify the ancestral cell.
◆現在の戦術は1組の危険因子に同時に影響がある。　　
The current strategy has an influence on a set of risk factors at once.
◆Duracel社は様々な寸法及び形状の部品を生産する能力がある。
Duracel has the capability of producting parts in a wide variety of sizes and configurations.

1.2 have以外を使う

◆大量の放射線は人にとって害がある。
     A lot of radiation is harmful for a person.
◆AはBよりも栄養分を早く吸収し、速く再循環する傾向がある。
     A tend to absorb nutrients and to recycle them faster than B.
     A have a tendancy to absorb nutrients and to recycle them faster than B.
◆電圧の歪量はシステムのインピーダンスに関係がある。
     The amount of voltage distortion is related to the system inpedance.
     The amount of voltage distortion has a relation to the system inpedance.
◆2つの理論はからみあいの効果をモデル化する仕方に違いがある。
     The two theories differ in how they model the effect of entanglements.
◆表面はカルシウムの強度に大きなばらつきがあった。
     The surface showed large variations in Ca intensity.
◆すべてのDSCスキャンにおいて観察された小さいピークは０℃付近に中心がある。
     Small peaks observed in all DSC scans are centerd around 0℃.
◆この病気は皮膚の斑点に特徴がある。
     This disease is characterized by spots on the skin.

◆抗原を処理する2つの別々の経路、すなわち、外因性抗原のための経路と内因性抗原のための経路が存在するということは生物学的に意味がある。
The exsistance of two separate pathways of antigen processing, on for exogenous antigens and one for endogenous antigens makes biological sense.

◆このサイクルはガス燃焼式住宅用ヒートポンプとして見込みがある。
This cycle holds promise as a gas-fired residential heat pump. ◆この公式を厳密に導き出すことは、いずれにせよ努力するだけの価値がある。
To derive this formula rigorously is worth the effort in any event. ◆この材料の特性は多くの会社が注目するだけの価値がある。
The material's characteristics merit the attention of many companies.

2.…は…が多い

この構文は、「多い」で代表させてある。「多い」のところには「少ない」、「大きい」、「小さい」、「高い」、「低い」などの形容詞が入る。
◆燃料添加剤は融点が比較的低い。
The fuel additives have a relativety low melting point. ◆化石は破損がなく、おどろくほど保存状態がよいものが多い。
Many of the fossil are intact and astonishingly well preserved. ◆彼のデータはルネッサンス時代の芸術家が創作した人体のさまざまな部分に関する何千という測定結果から取ったものが多い。
Much of his data was taken from thousands of measurements on parts of human body made by Renaissance srtists. ◆これらの曲線はアービン曲線と呼ばれることが多い。
These curves are often called Irvin's curves. ◆効果的な危機管理は、多くの素人の協力を必要とする場合が多い。

The prepreg has difficulty in filling narrow gaps.
※プリプレグとは、炭素繊維に樹脂を含浸した成形用中間材料 ◆試料１は試料２に比べて測定値のばらつきが大きかった。
Sample1 showed larger variations in the observed values than sample2. ◆多くの金属の場合、めっき温度は90℃が望ましい。
The desirable plating temperature is 90℃ for most metals. ◆使用前に、ユーザーは製品が自分の望む用途に適しているかどうかはっきりさせるのが望ましい。
Before use, it is recommended that the user determine the suitability od the product for his inteended use.

3.…は…が…ある

この構文は多くの場合「…は…が…である」という形で用いられる。
◆有機物の被膜、重金属および微粒子を除去するために、シリコンウェハーは使用前に化学的に洗浄するのが普通である。
Prior to use, silicon wafers are usually cleaned chemically to remove organic films, heavy metals and particulates.
